Cascade Seniors Garden

Cascade Seniors Garden

Project Highlights

Development of a detailed design for the City’s first public sensory garden within the existing Cascade Gardens in Broadbeach which included sensory elements including musical equipment, wayfinding design, productive gardens and custom furniture elements.
Rigorous detailed design process for a safe and accessible outdoor space that was appropriate for people with dementia and encourages social engagement, whilst promoting a connection with nature and providing opportunities for outdoor exploration and sensory engagement.
The design created multiple activity areas with different purposes and included bespoke custom timber furniture and raised planters as well as custom arbour structures which referenced the mid century architecture of the intended elderly user group.
LEAD were engaged to deliver the detailed design and tender documentation for the Gold Coast’s first public sensory garden. This process involved comprehensive stakeholder engagement and research in order to create a suitable and engaging garden which catered to the needs of both the intended elderly users and satisfied the various City of Gold Coast requirements for public spaces. The detailed design built on an existing concept for the garden and further developed the ideas and details along with implementing many new design ideas and design principles.

Obstacle

To design a public space for elderly users involved an extensive set of design considerations and parameters from both an accessibility and legibility standpoint, as well as Council’s various requirements and standards for public spaces within the city. The design needed to satisfy all these conditions whilst also creating a unique design which pushed the boundaries and provided a model for how therapeutic public spaces can be designed and implemented throughout the city.

Our Approach

LEAD utilised our extensive experience with designing sensory gardens for various Aged Care providers, along with previous experience on significant City of Gold Coast public parks to deliver a unique sensory garden for the City. The process involved extensive engagement with a large and multi-dimensional stakeholder group to deliver a truly interesting and place-specific design outcome. The design included a vast array of zones of sensory planting and objects including musical instruments and productive gardens, along with retro arbour structures to stimulate reminiscence and sensory engagement for the intended elderly users. With its prominent location within the Cascade Gardens, and close proximity to the adjacent children’s playground, the design allows spaces and opportunities for users of all ability and ages to enjoy and engage with the space.
