Project Highlights

Developed an integrated detailed design for landscape areas to proposed new School administration building
Coordination of detailed design connecting spaces across multiple levels of site including connection to existing School buildings
Successful engagement with relevant stakeholders and preparation of detailed design drawings for tender and construction purposes
Brigidine College is a Private Catholic Girls School in Brisbane and LEAD were engaged by the Project Builder for the School’s proposed new Administration building to undertake detailed design for tender and construction purposes. The project involved the design of landscape treatments and spaces to the ground, first and second levels of the proposed building and involved extensive coordination with the builder, client and project architect. The design involved the integration of the new building with the surrounding existing school buildings and spaces. This process required analysis and improvement of the existing site circulation and functionality through re-grading for compliance with relevant Australian accessibility standards to all new areas. The design focused on creating functionable and legible spaces to the extent of the building across multiple levels including the creation of new outdoor gathering spaces, feature arrival terrace, seating areas, and multiple access paths.

A central requirement of the design brief was the creation of accessible path connections to the ground, first and second floors of the proposed new Administration building. To create a functional, legible and accessible series of connections within the constrained existing site conditions required an integrated and unique approach to the detailed design process.

Our Approach

Through initial sketch design and extensive coordination with the project team, LEAD developed a hierarchy of landscape spaces which were connected across multiple levels of the site. These included plantings which could be viewed to from upper levels, and feature trees which would penetrate up to higher levels to integrate the landscape and increase its exposure and amenity across the site. A series of stairs were created to quickly and creatively connect the spaces across the 3 levels of the building and to effectively enhance the architecture and connection of spaces. Additionally, accessible ramps and pathways were provided to allow equitable access throughout the site and to allow legible and functional site circulation. The resultant detailed design provides a variety of spaces which all respond to the needs and architectural layout of the building whilst maximising the perceived impact and useability of the available landscape areas.
